Hüma Love

I’m spreading love all around me this week and I’m loving it.

You might have seen the review and giveaway I had featuring the natural energy gels Hüma? I’ve continued my love story with these gels and really think they’re worth looking up if you’re into fueling for or during your runs with something more natural and food like than the normal more or less artificial gels out there on the market. One of the many reasons I first fell in love with these gels was that I had zero problems with my stomach when using them. I usually have some kind of war going on in my belly when it comes to fueling for my runs, but none of that with the Hüma Gels. I find the taste and texture of these gels really great. I feel like I’m eating something real that are good for me while they give me the energy I need to keep on going with my running. The ingredients are all pronounceable and appeal to me way more than most other gels which I can hardly pronounce half of the ingredients. How great is it to actually KNOW exactly what you’re putting in your body instead of just trusting the ingredients to be good, or at least not too bad for you?! I love it.

Hüma Chia Energy Gel Review and Giveaway

A little while ago I got in contact with Ian, the man behind the Hüma Energy Gels, and he gave me the chance to review his product which made me more than happy.

I received a Mixed Sample Pack (two Strawberry and two Apple Cinnamon gels) and I really couldn’t wait to try them out. As I’m just now coming back from injury I haven’t been able to bring the gels out for any long runs, but I’ve been using them as a pre-run fuel before heading out on my runs.

This is my thoughts about the gels:

  • Great taste! Both gels taste REAL, it quickly becomes obvious to me that there are no artificial ingredients here. And a plus – it even SMELLS like real strawberry and apple/cinnamon. To be honest I’m usually not the one to pick apple/cinnamon flavored things, but this surprised me with actually being my favorite of the two.
  • Texture is perfect – not too gooey, not to runny. It’s like a puree and this makes it easy to swallow (I’ve been having a problem with when it comes to other gels).
  • The packaging is nice to look at and it’s also very easy to open. I have a hard time seeing the opening of the gels as a problem when actually using them on the go.
  • The few, natural and REAL ingredients (see below).
  • No problems WHAT SO EVER with my stomach. This is something I’ve been looking for when it comes to gels, and I’m so happy to know that there are actually products out there which won’t mess with me!
  • Chi-chi-chia seeds! I’ve grown to love chia seeds and try to add it to most things I’m eating nowadays. The seeds are ground and adds a little bit to the puree-y texture. Love it! The chia seeds are also a real super food full of Omega-3, protein, antioxidants and soluble fiber.
  • What should be mentioned too, is that these gels are Gluten Free which I always think is a great thing.

As you can see above there are only a few ingredients in the gels (7 in the Strawberry Gel and 8 in the Apple/Cinnamon Gel), and they are all ingredients I can pronounce (which says A LOT with me being just a silly little Swede with English as 3rd language)! This is something I’m totally stoked about, and shouldn’t we all be considering all the JUNK that’s mixed into so many food products out there nowadays?!

I am so thankful for getting the chance to try these gels, I’ve been looking for something like this for months and now, finally, I can stop my search. This is what I’d like to bring for fuel on my long runs in the future!

My Daily Supplements

There’s a whole lot of different things we need to think about when it comes to our health and what we eat. I find it hard to really get a hold on how well I am ACTUALLY eating.. Since I started running I’ve been forced to look over my habits as I lost a lot of weight (I know this is usually a good thing, but when I was down to 105lbs for my 5’5″ body it got to a point where I desperately needed to step my intake up) and could not seem to get a hold on how I should be eating to fuel my body. Since then I’ve found a diet and a way of fueling that works well for me. I’ve put on some weight again, but I’m still way beyond where I started when I started with the running in May 2012.

I had been taking a multivitamin pill for a while when I found ENERGYbits. These 100% spirulina algaes are FULL of the vitamins and minerals (in fact, if you’re using the bits every day the only thing you might want to think about is Vitamin D which the spirulina algae doesn’t have) our bodys need and I stopped taking my normal multivitamins. As I live in Hawaii and usually get a bit of sunshine everyday I don’t have a crazy need for the Vitamin D, but if you’re living in a place with little sunshine or if you’re spending a lot of time inside you might want to think about taking a Vitamin D supplement. As we just moved to a less sunny spot on the island I’m wondering if I should go back to taking a little bit of Vitamin D supplements too. Because of my history of depression I need to be very careful with these kind of things as a slight little imbalance in my body can affect me very bad..


Here’s my daily intake of other things than food:


Spirulina in the shape of ENERGYbits (which I’m sure by now you already know I love..) or Spirulina Powder added to juice, yoghurt, smoothies or just on top of bananas.

A while ago I got in contact with Nutrex Hawaii as I was curious about their product BioAstin. I’ve seen it around a bunch lately and as I’ve had some problems with my skin and getting burned easily in the sun I figured it would be interesting to see if these pills could help me. BioAstin consists of the antioxidant Astaxanthin and is said to have many benefits for our body. As I’m right now taking these pills daily to be able to review the product I’ll be back in a later post telling you more about it.

Alpha Liphoic Acid (ALA) is the third and last supplement I take on a daily basis. This is an antioxidant that are found in low doses in some foods (spinach, broccoli, yams, potatoes, yeast, tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, carrots, beets etc) and is also made naturally in our bodies. It is supposed to fight free radicals, help lower the blood sugar level and have benefits for skin and overall health. I actually got this to see if it would help me with what seems like never ending skin problems. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties it can help treat psoriasis and atopic and contact dermatitis.

So, with added Vitamin D and maybe some fish (krill?) oil I’m thinking I’ll be all set together with my normal mostly veggie diet.

But there are some things I’m still on the lookout for:

Looking to find a protein powder (preferably easy to shake up in a blender bottle) for fast on-the-go fuel, but this one seems to be way harder then I imagined as my stomach seem to hate everything I try. Bummer! Good thing the ENERGYbits are giving me tons of protein at least. I should also mention that my husband is doing his very best with providing great proteins (without necessarily being meat) for every meal – something I tend to be pretty bad at even after a thousand years as vegetarian/vegan/pescetarian..

Of course I’m also ALWAYS on the lookout for easy and tasty gels/chews/drinks to bring along on long runs.

Electrolyte tabs/powders tend to be really hard on my belly so I’m relaying on the ENERGYbits to take care of the electrolyte business for now.

I am far from an expert in these things and if you have any suggestions, please feel free to tell me whatever crosses your mind.

The power of EnergyBits

As I got to Seattle I had an order of EnergyBits waiting for me. And earlier today, my first morning here I was excited to get to try them out. After having almost the whole week off running due to a cold I had a hard time getting motivated and happy about my upcoming run but I have to say that the EnergyBits totally made things change.

I took 30ish of the Bits, swallowed them with a bunch of water and got dressed to go out for my run. I was amazed by the change of feeling in my body – I went from being tired and not motivated at all (you know when you start doing kind of whatever to NOT have to change into running clothes and go out for that run? Or is it just me?) to getting changed and going out on my run, feeling great! I didn’t have my usual “third-kilometre-dip”, I just felt strong and fast (OK, maybe I’m not a fast runner but I can still FEEL fast) throughout the whole run. After getting back I felt like I should probably just have kept going, I had so much energy left (even though I had done a run with a way faster pace than usual)?! But I decided to be smart, because of an upcoming race and because of the cold that I’ve been trying so hard to fight off the last couple of days..

I will continue to use these bits and I will let you know if this amazing feeling is holding on? Or maybe even getting stronger?

My neighbor invited me over for wine and a chat yesterday. It didn’t take long before she got serious with me.. She used to be a PT and nutritionist for fitness models and she was more than concerned about my training and my weight. And the talk definitely got me thinking..

The thing is that since I hit the 20’s I’ve always been normal in weight, eating more than I should’ve but still having good enough metabolism to not gain too much weight. And no, I didn’t feel good about my body and always wanted to loose weight but not until I started running it happened. And boy did it happen! Since I started running I’ve gone from a little chubby and with a weight of 124 lbs to 107 lbs today. Not only have I gone from being chubby to skinny, but I’ve also built some freaking good muscles. But lately I’ve been feeling more and more “drained”, in general, but mostly on my run days. Thinking of it I know I’ve had some problems eating well since I started with all this exercising..

Obviously a person that’s going from not really working out regularly for years to getting in 3-5 runs/week plus 4-6 other workouts/week is going to have to rethink the whole fueling part.. But I haven’t got a grip on it yet! Not at all. My appetite comes and goes. I decided to take a look at my daily calorie intake for a few days to know what I was dealing with. And seeing the numbers.. I got afraid! My worst day I had an intake of 480 calories! And that was a day when I did a morning run and an afternoon core strength workout. Can you believe it? It looks like total MADNESS in my eyes at least.

So from now on I need to work on this. My neighbor mentioned protein powder and I must admit I’ve been thinking of it too, but because of this whole world being new to me I don’t even know where to start. I just know I need to build my body up and stop breaking it down. Now!
