Are You Running with Music?

Since I started running I’ve had my iphone or ipod with me most of the time. I even ran “Did You Survive the End of The World” 10k with my iphone in my hand/inside my bra/in my shorts because I forgot to bring my armband. I mean, come on! 1. Don’t you write a packing list for your races Evelin? 2. THAT desperate to listen to music when you race you’re spending energy and TIME (probably lost at least 30 sec on that race) struggling with finding a proper way to carry your phone?!

Lately though, I’ve been surprising myself by going out on my runs without phone/ipod and it’s been.. Wonderful! Never thought I’d say this actually, but I really enjoy listening to myself breathing/moving forward and the surrounding while out running. Not to mention that it’s actually a lot safer too – I can hear cars coming, instead of seeing them when they’re right by my side!

The fact that I’m rarely carrying my phone on my runs nowadays though, means that I’m not able to get photos from my runs. You might have seen my posts “My Run in Pictures” I posted last fall. I really enjoyed that and wish I could do more of that here in Hawaii. There really are some sweet spots to share with you all!

Dec 6th 7

Anyways. I still enjoy having music in my ears (ear, I’ve decided to always keep my right ear “naked” to be able to hear cars/people/pigs approach me) from time to time and lately I’ve been kind of tired of my playlist. In fact, I’m in need of new music in general. Not just while running.

Q: What are your favorite songs to run to at the moment? Feel free to share. And happy running to you all!

Last Friday I wrote about three of my favorite things last week. I’ll do the same today:

running for dummies

Who is really a runner? Do you consider yourself a runner? This is a question that is brought up every once in a mile in the running community online. I, myself, have been thinking a lot about it to. Could I really call myself a runner after only running a few races and not getting 30 miles in per week? I didn’t think so, but I’ve come to realize that I actually am a runner. You don’t have to run far or fast to be a runner. Running for Dummies brought this up in a great blogpost last Saturday and I feel like this is something we all could need to think about. Head on over and read Lea’s post right away if you are practicing running but not giving yourself credit for what an amazing thing you’re actually doing!

Before and After

Photos by Sacha Goldberger

A while ago I stumbled across these photos and I love them. The photographer Sacha Goldberger met these runners and photographed them right after their run, and later invited them to come to his studio looking just like they would in their “normal life”. What a difference! Isn’t it interesting how different we can look in different situations of our life?! I especially love the “raw”, pure and strong look of the runners.

My foam roller. Oh, I’m happy I have it! I got mine after having a little bit of trouble with my knees last summer and to be honest, the first times I used it I.. Hated it. At least while I was at it. But after just a few times of using the red roll I felt a total change in my legs while and after doing my runs. Nowadays I love spending time with my roller, it hurts sooo good and my legs feel so much better when I keep using it regularly. They aren’t very spendy either wich is a reason to look into buying one if you don’t have one already. Deep tissue massage done by yourself, at home, whenever it suits you? Can’t get much better!

music apps

As I am from Sweden(where Spotify was started) I was introduced to Spotify a bunch of years ago and have been paying for a premium account for a long time now. I love it! Since I started running I’ve been so happy to be able to make playlists for free and being able to use them online when out and about doing my thing. But lately my husband has convinced me to try out Pandora some more and I have to admit I like it too.. Not as much as Spotify as I can’t bring Pandora with me as I run (due to the online demand), but it really is a great way to find new music. Two of the most used apps on my phone right now!

Top 3 Running/Workout Songs #1

I’ve mentioned before that I always run with music. Without my dear Spotify running on the iPhone during my runs I feel lost (to be honest, I haven’t gone without music more than maybe 0,5K).

I ALWAYS want new music ideas to add to my running playlists and I’m thinking that I’ll share my Top 3 Songs here every week. Hopefully someone out there gets happy about some new/old ideas for tunes to work out/run to?

My Top 3 Songs for this week:

Navet – For the Show (Familjen Remix)

Starfucker – Girls Just Want to Have Fun

Two Door Cinema Club – Something Good Can Work (Kitsune Maison Compilation)

Music to my ears

Since I started running I haven’t gone a single run without music playing on my iPhone (using Spotify). I love getting inspired and motivated during my runs and music is a great way to keep pushing through when it starts getting hard out there.

Unfortunately I’ve been bad with finding new running music and I find myself constantly looking (listening) around to find new tunes to bring along on my runs. Maybe there’s others out there who like me needs inspiration when it comes to running music? So I’m thinking – why not share my lists and maybe you can give me yours?

I made a list getting prepared for my first race, the Rain Forest Runs 10K in August, and it’s still hanging in there, with some modifications.

Here goes:

Jonathan Johansson – En Hand I Himlen
The Smiths – A Rush And A Push And The Land Is Ours
Fanfarlo – Sand & Ice
Starfucker – Girls Just Want To Have Fun
Timo Räisänen – Outcast
Two Door Cinema Club – Something Good Can Work
Elizabeth & The Catapult – Race You
Architecture in Helsinki – Escapee
Phoenix – If I Ever Feel Better
I’m From Barcelona – Get In Line
Hot Chip – And I Was A Boy From School
The Naked And Famous – Young Blood (Tiesto & Hardwell Remix)
Phoenix – Too Young
The Magnetic Fields – The Luckiest Guy On The Lower East Side
Two Door Cinema Club – What You know
Navet – For The Show (Familjen Remix)
